  1. I have a 5.5 ton uni forest with remote and a manual 4 ton igland. The remote is awesome, I would never do without one now. The igland is a good simple winch but the drum is narrow and tall so cable spools up high reducing the gearing. This means that you get 4 ton when all the cable is out, but only about 2 when its almost in. The uni forest seems to have a lot more pull, even close in. I like the uni forest a lot.
  2. So thats why kings cross was closed yesterday...
  3. Remote control chipper is ace Eddie, I had the heizo on a 210hp new holland last week and was controlling it from the valtra as I fed it. Really handy.
  4. My roof lights have dim/dip, theres a switch between the lower and upper lights. The problem is the upper ones give so much glare back from the crane and winch. So I am going to fit lights to the winch.
  5. I don't know either, there's some pretty special stuff that the farmers use, 1200 litres of spray for example, 3 ton bucket on a front loader etc... I think so long as you stay within width restrictions and lights are visible, then its ok. I have driven round with the posch processor on the front and the splitter on the back...
  6. That's what I'll tell HMRC. Before referring them to my financial advisors: Bolam, Crocket and Bolam.
  7. I see where you are coming from Dave. If I added my profit to the wages it would be over half of turnover. That said, for a two man team the wages should be lower in relation to the turnover. It's once you get a few employees that the ratio should go up a bit. I'll have to look in to the vat reg thing, I've only done about £280k this year so that should be ok?
  8. That's about right Huck, I just worked out my wage bill is pretty much 1/3 of turnover, and I'm happy with that.
  9. Doesn't seem a bad offer, but there are always other things to consider. The arb world is a goldfish bowl and some companies have a reputation for one thing or another, not saying this is the case here, but if you have a reputation as a hard man to work for, or all your kit is crap or all your jobs are crap or whatever that could affect things. Good staff are hard to find for sure, I prefer to train them up for managerial roles, I'd hate to have to bring in someone at that level. RE the offer, don't give them an allowance, just get them a phone, same goes for PPE and climbing kit.
  10. The first sharp square edge will wear off an anvil quite quickly, best to re-adjust the gap at that point and then it will last a while. I reset the gap on my Heizohack last week to within 1mm before a contract chipping job. I have chipped 300 ton so far. The results have been good. 300 ton is 12 arctic loads, thats a lot of wood, the difference between a <1mm gap and a >5mm gap would be huge in terms of machine wear and diesel used....
  11. The anvil gap should be about 1mm I would say. Doesn't look too bad a machine, but those knives are dull. You'll notice a difference with some sharp ones.
  12. As head groundsman says, this is disgraceful, and deeply offensive to the genuinely disabled. I lost my legs in a chipper accident, but then I changed what I ate and grew a new pair! FFS No wonder so many people are voting UKIP, this is the kind of crap that pushes me in that direction.
  13. I am looking for some headlights to go on my front mounted winch. The tractor has alternative roof mounted headlights with dip/main beams, but you get so much glare back off the crane and winch that I'd be better with lights mounted on the winch...
  14. We have one, its ok, its a nice saw, but not quite as fast as the 560 or my ported 357..http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/79001-50-60cc-chainsaw-comparison-11.html
  15. Anyonseen any decent LED spot lights rather than flood / work lights?
  16. I'd keep the trailer battery, with mine if I put it on another vehicle which doesn't have a charger it will tip it maybe 5 times on the trailer battery, perhaps more. One decent run on the landrover and its fully charged again.....
  17. I use these,http://www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk/en/products/faithfull-32a-plug-110v?utm_medium=google_shopping&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=google_shopping&gclid=Cj0KEQiA8MSkBRCP5LaRlcOAusMBEiQAiqldkuSVk0k145ekZvejRIh5pgAWbI6ZjoK6lG8E1ogeYQwaAj548P8HAQ and a heavy wire, they can handle a lot of current which the tipper will draw. If you have a weak battery on the trailer it will draw current from the car and that can melt a lesser wire / plug.
  18. wouldn't that be hard on the wrists, with all the twisting on impact? I'd like to try it on something other than clean birch.
  19. A chute extension would be cheaper than messing with the trailer. I made my own for the Greenmech, wasn't a big job...
  20. The GD trailer works great, we used one with our Jensen for a while but the Forst is too long for it..
  21. I have been contract biomass chipping for the last two days, I have been using the clients tractor (a 210hp new holland) to speed up production, and it certainly does! I can do 100 ton a day feeding it with mine....
  22. I think the lack of airflow would seriously affect the results, you'd need to use vented bags. Other than that it would work really well.
  23. Interesting. We were talking about taking samples to the bush anyway.
