  1. Honestly, if the boot ws on the other foot, I would be reflective, at the end of the day business is business, I would appreciate the call but wouldn't, by the same token appreciate have my nose rubbed in it. I think it's tricky, if I cared less and could say "sod it, his loss" etc. etc. things would be a lot easier. Am I being a bit too sensitive???????????
  2. Sounds as if it could be an awkward phone call!!!!!!
  3. I mean at the end of the day the job is mine and there's no way I'll feel bad about legitamately getting it, and there's also no way I'll be thinking about not taking it. We all need to put food on the table. It's just I rather do things the right way.
  4. I can assure you there is no under-hand dealings going on. They got my no. from Y.P. and I had not made myself our my company aware to them prior to that call. I would rather build bridges in our trade than burn them!!!!
  5. Hello peeps Got a call the other day for a job. Went along and looked at it, sent in the quote and got it accepted....good times. It's a large job, 3-4 weeks worth in a prestigous garden, slap bang in the middle of the market that I'm aiming for. Only one problem.... I have worked in the garden previously for my past employer, I have since left and started my own firm up (1 year ago). I have been very careful as to NOT target his customers and tread on his feet, indeed we live and operate some 25-30miles apart, still I can't help thinking that to him it will look as if I've been poaching his "high-end" cliental-which I haven't. Should I call him and explain, or leave it alone? I would rather not leak him off he was good to me as a boss, however business is business??? He is very sucessful and I'm sure will not miss the work, but for a new start up like me the work is more than needed!!!! Any thoughts???????????
  6. Oh and by the way Chas wants his Dvd's back!!!!!lol
  7. Not talking about Stiffreddi there are e Ross???
  8. I've tried that in the past, lost a few jobs, but I think more often than not people are trying their luck and if you say no can do they will accept that the price quoted if fair, and go with you, it's all about the confidence in your pricing and knowing yourself that it's a fair price for a good job......and that we are not selling ourselves short, both personally and as a trade
  9. Do you barter with people or is the price you give the price you stick to??
  10. Agree 100% mate. Found out the other day that to hire a man and a van is £45/hour (for 2 men)- £360 per day. Bet he doesn't pay employers liab and public liab and invested in 20k+ of tools etc. Your right we have to stick to our guns on prices, we are more than £45/hour as a company, but not that much!!!and we are skilled craftsmen....all of us.(not taking away from the crucial services that man and a van provide lol) Sorry for the rant!!
  11. Thanks for the help people.....I'd figured about a day at least, but good point with the stakes etc.etc. Problem is people don't seem to expect to pay a lot for planting... do you find that????
  12. Hello folks!!!! Just about to quote to plant a hedge.....probably Western Red Cedar (evergreen screen needed). The stretch is about 25metres long so I reckon I'll need between 25-35 trees. 25 if the client goes for larger tree, 35 if smaller. How long do reckon it would take to plant these???? I think the larger trees are in 15litre pots. Would a day do it??? Thanks everyone, much appreciated
  13. Agree totally i was just trying to make a point mate... silkys are dangerous enough to have you hand that close we all know how badly a silky can bite!! Saws have the potential to be much worse!!!
  14. So it's no different with a Japanese Elm????
  15. Seems pretty close to me mate. I try to keep my fingers more than 2 inches away from my Silky!!!. Maybe he was at the limits of his reach. Why did you not lower the branches down???
  16. Hello everyone. Been asked to Pollard a Japanese Elm, but having never worked on any Elms apart from felling dead ones, I don't know if they will tollerate being Pollarded. Tried to convince the client to have the crown thinned and then cable-braced (cobra/nirex) but she was having none of it. So can we Pollard Japanese Elms. If not will try to persue the bracing option. Any thoughts?????? Much appreciated, cheers peeps.
  17. That's great advice mate....many thanks
  18. I do have P.L. insurance. How much does P.I. cost approx???Does the report have to be done by a qualified consultant... degree level I'm guessing or can someone like me, craftsman level do the report??? Tree surveys do interest me but am I entering a somewhat dodgy world of insurers and insurance. Is ist best left to the consultants??? Cheers
  19. Alright peeps Been asked to carry out a tree survey, done them before for friends and small gardens etc but this is for a developer-many trees!!!. Can any one give me any pointers inc. how you cost a survey?? price per tree? price for whole survey? basic charge for survey? What's the best approach to take?? I'm pretty sure I know what needs to be included in the survey, but suggestions welcome. Thanks everyone.
  20. Right guys, reckon I'll go for the BFG AT's they seem to be a good compromise, plenty of miles, enough grip for most jobs. Next question is..... I have always liked to have the white writing on the outside, does this make me trailer trash or too cool for school?????
  21. So do you all get those tyres locally to yourselves or are there any decent, cheap websites ou there???
  22. Haven't got any yet mate but will get some to ya when I have some. Hope you're ok mate
