That's pretty nice Dylan. Did you make it yourself or did you get it fabricated for you??
How quicky do you reckon you could split a transit load on that??

Safe Useful Life Expectancy (SULE)
It is the key to a report to back an application such as this.
If you are unsure yourself, any good arb consultant will be able to sort you out.
Such a report from a consultant will cost around £500. I am assuming that the this tree's SULE is low (<10 years), based on your pics. If that is the correct assumption then its retention is pointless, when you can plant a replacement tree with a century or 2 ahead of it.
Of course, the tree could be heavily reduced, but again, its amenity value (Why the TPO was made???) would be significantly reduced and the on going cost to your client increased..
Remember, SULE is not when the tree is a pile of sticks on the ground, but when the tree is going to start shedding limbs, major crown dieback etc...
Cheers mate!
That's some A1 advice Gmann you seem to know your onions old chap!!!

So that would be a stake in each "corner" of the rootball and then a ratchet strap all around all four stakes?? Pulling them in together?
-
Evenin' all
Got a rather large tree to plant soon and I was going to use the "Platipus" system, but I also been tempted by the simplicity of the "Arbofix" system. I've never used either. What sort of results have any of you had with the diferrent systems. Particullarly the "Arbofix" one.???

Agree whole-heartedly. I priced a job up last week felling a very big ugly conifer, bt lines, houses, summer houses, limited drop zone..........nightmare. I put £1000 + vat on it, I lost the job to a quote of £395. I just can't compete with that and I wouldn't want to either.
Good call my friend, your prices are very very competetive anyway!! I always take the attitude that some jobs you (we) as pros are never going to get.

I made it myself from scratch, cant remember exactly what it cost but roughly as below
Ram: Bought from tractor breaker £20.00
"H" beam Scrap dealer £10.00
Spool valve Hydraulic dealer £50.00
Power pack Ebay £350.00
Tow pack (wheels suspension etc) Ebay £100.00
Steel Don't know as I don't have the bill yet
Some of these prices are rough prices as the basic splitter was built some years ago, and most of the parts are second hand but I would think you could build something similar for under £1000 (not putting too much on for your own time)
If anyone wants one made let me know.
I'm interested. How quick is the return on the ram. Some iof the one's I've seen have been very slow!!!
Only problem I can see is I'm down in sunny Kent!!!!

Managed to get some picks of my log splitter. As I said yesterday it's the 3rd incarnation of this machine, but it seems to work well. The bar carrying the lights etc. is removeable for working.
That's a great machine Bob, it's exactly what I had in mind, and towable too!!! Did you make it yourself, or get it fabricated?? Do you mind me asking roughly what it set you back.
I really need to address my logging situation this year, and I reckon something like this could really get us on our way!

You've read my mind. I've been looking around for couriers lately for the old chippers blades. Cheers mate...........you rate them?????????
-
Gotta love the spikes up a big pop (where appropriate ofcourse)!
Love the BIG V-sign they've now got in their garden
-
Has anyone ever made their own log splitter. In principle they seem simple.......engine, ram, pump and some decent steelwork.
I'm tempted to have a go at getting one made. Anyone been tempted to do this before and ACTUALLY done it. What was the resulting machine like?? Any tips and advice???
Thanks to you all.

Hi there as you may know I'm looking to buy a new camera. I found this great deal on a listings/freeads type website. I contacted the seller to ask a few questions about camera, condition etc etc and he sent me this reply
"I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them. Let me expain : you`ll pay eBay...i`ll ship the camera, once you`ll be approved to buy(after you finish the transaction with eBay). You have 5 days to decide if you keep it or not.If you decide to keep it...eBay will relise the deposit on my name and you`ll have to transfer the rest of the money to them.If you decide not to keep it...you have to ship it back with the same shipping company for no costs and you will be refunded 100%.Fair enough ? If so..let me know your full name and address including zip code so we can proceed. "
What do you reckon, seems like a good deal, any one else had dealings via Ebay on a set up like this???

Yep I should have taken some shots aswell, but 1 drunken night= 1 broken camera!!!
This tree is a specimen tree in a private garden
-
Thanks Monkeyd
The leaves are all brown and dropping, the berries too are small and shrivelled, to me it looks as if its just damn thirsty, but would that be so obviuos in only 4 weeks or so (well that's what my client has told me)

Any ideas people?????
An aparent healthy Rowan that has lost 40% of its folliage in the last 4 weeks??
I thought that Rowans were pretty much bomb proof!!

Great shots John, you seem to have a good eye for a decent photo. Years and years ago I used to study photography and there was always the old Nikon versus Canon discussions. I suppose it's like sthil versus husky!!!!
Thanks for thr advice mate, I'll let you know what the outcome is.

I've had two Canon SLRs in the and one Nikon I've always really liked the Canons, but the build quality of the Nikon and their lenses are legendary. Are the modern Nikons built aswell as the older ones?
-
Hello all
After a drunken night and a few too many drops I have broken my camera!!! I have been thinking for a while to ditch the compacts and go for an SLR, the last one I owned must have been 10 years ago and although the quality form the compacts is great in my opinion it's not a patch on an SLR.
I've been looking at the Nikon D90 and the Canon EOS 500d
Anyone with helpful advice out there??
Thanks y'all

No worries mate. I always appreciate a little tongue in cheek action!!!

I can 70 at a squeeze. I think I've heard before that they have different gear ratios on different trucks. You obviously have the Le Mans option!!!
-
Who cares what you've started...........You have got the best avatar.
'Ah, oh, no... well, I don't think they wanted me to talk really. I don't think they wanted me to say anything. It was just their way of having a bit of fun, the swines. Strange thing is they make such bloody good cameras. '
Thanks tommer
Peter sellers makes me cry with laughter everytime I see one of his films.....legend!!!
