  1. I thought that. It would be especially good in the winter if I haven't destroyed it by then!
  2. It seems to me like the fella that does the climbing is under the impression that he is the only person in the country climbing trees for a living! I think he's climbed for Kew since he was an apprentice so he's very lucky to have worked on so many nice species and good locations.. maybe I'm just jealous! The chap in charge is from Blackburn I think. Don't get me wrong, the programme is doing a lot of good by bringing an awareness of arboriculture to the public. Telly needs more stuff like this.
  3. Just bought myself one and need some good basic recipes to get started. Ideally I want to prepare the food at night, put it in the thing and then hit the switch in the morning leaving it on through the day.
  4. Anyone been watching it? I saw the first episode but missed this Friday's. Looked pretty good making the birds nest in the top of the Scots Pine and the skyline looked good too
  5. My 020 neck scars are tiny and not worth posting a picture - nonetheless they still serve as a reminder
  6. I'd be interested in East Lancs course
  7. I thought the Icicle hitch was the only knot that could grab a tapering spar.. didn't know the klemheist could too?
  8. bring a half price chainsaw back with you
  9. I reckon a possible way to prevent this happening is to have a portfolio of before and after pics to show customers examples of what a 30% thin would look like and a range of other pruning methods. I know it sounds like choosing from a menu but it would give them a better idea of what they are agreeing to. Most of the general public don't sympathise with the good practice we as professionals are striving to adhere to. It seems they just entertain us by pretending to listening to our advice so that we start the job, then they set about being awkward. In the past I've had to remove a very insignificant twig after a heavy thin in a mature tree to make someone happy. The work you did on that tree looked good
  10. I'll be paying for it myself because my employers won't so I'm going to make sure I know the gear inside out. Would they expect a thorough knowledge about the various rope structures and braids etc?
  11. Nice one.. you'll get a discount cos I wouldn't have to travel too far! Any idea of how many inspectors there are near us? Wouldn't want to tread on people's toes too much.
  12. Someone told me that the trailer towing test is based on HGV class 2 test and if it was his money he would sooner put in for the latter. Not much more and you can drive just about anything in our industry.
  13. I think the owner of the company is at risk from a heavy fine but I've only read of one case where this has happened and it was for around £3,000. I've not heard of them taking kit away but you'd think that was pointless because they could just go out and get some more. There's been a thread somewhere on here to the case I'm referring to. There's a lot of variation in opinions regarding aerial rescue but mine is from the view that there should be someone on the ground who is capable at least of climbing at speed. Though that is where the law lets us down because being qualified in aerial rescue does not necessarily mean a person is capable of performing a rescue, especially if that person does not climb regularly.
  14. Does anyone know where I can do this in the North West? 'NPTC Thorough Examination of Arboricultural Equipment' Does this course qualify a person to inspect equipment and pass another persons gear? Cost, duration, is it worthwhile? Any advice appreciated
  15. If yer a little weasel like me, wear braces to support the weight and a belt tightened slightly to prevent the dust heading toward the family jewels
  16. Real do was that, thanks a lot Dean for letting us use your wood and providing bush tucker. Good to meet you all.
  17. I'll be there and I'm bringing a friend along if that's ok? He's a caver so he is pretty clued up on SRT
  18. I'm still up for it. Hopefully we get nice weather rather than the crap that's been hitting me the past two mornings!
  19. My mistake - Its the Tree Climbers Guide thats the 3rd edition and there is no 3rd edition of the tree climbers companion. I got Bryan confused too!
  20. I've heard that - not bad for £13.50 either but they are after 6.50 for p+p second class! I might be better getting a few books in one order or chat to them on the phone.
  21. Been looking at some of the publications on this site http://www.treesource.co.uk Some interesting titles. Which of these books do arbtalk folk recommend? Some of them are pretty pricey so I don't want to invest on something I'm not going to find useful. Has anyone got the Tree Climbers Companion 3rd edition? I wonder what the differences are to the 2nd. I used to work with the guy who's illustrations are used in the Companion and he didn't know there was a 3rd edition!
  22. I've been through an ND arb and have worked in the industry for some time now so I should be a useful tree warden. I've learnt more working for the council tree gang in the last two years than I have in all my previous work with contractors and its given me a greater interest in the related fields. I've also made some pretty good contacts around here so getting hold of spare trees and materials should be relatively easy. I put my application in last week so I hope they take me on - I don't see why not. I'll let you know how it goes anyway
  23. Sounds good. So its as good as you make it. Do you get any discounts on books or put on any courses for free as a tree warden? If not, perhaps suggest it to the coordinator - maybe a course on bats if you want to be a woodland conservationist.
  24. Aye. Perhaps I might hold out for a team leader position in one of the local councils. Saves the hassle and expense of doing more courses and exams and all that. My money would be better spend doing a trailer towing test!
