  1. Hey, us new guys have gotta start somewhere. Give us a break, huh? College is cosy and you're right, they don't teach you how to crown reduce or thin or whatever. They show you how to use a saw 'safely' and climbing technique. It's up to you experienced guys to show us how the jobs done. Surely you don't really expect anyone to come out of college and be fully confident at all aspects of the job? It takes a special teacher to instill confidence...
  2. You get a lot of ladies asking for that, do you?...bushes trimmed, that is.
  3. I always used to hate Sundays as a kid...they were so boring! I now realise their true worth. I LOVE not doing anything except making dinner and checking out emails, reading the paper, drinking endless tea curled up by the fire- even better in Autumn! Bliss
  4. Yep. Thought my girl had had a lay-in at 7.30, but no. It was really 6.30.
  5. What a way to start the day!! What kinda trees you working on in Bermuda?
  6. School hours: 9.30-3.00. Probably sounds like I'm a light weight, but my time with my girl is far more valuable than anything else. Plus I do more landscaping than tree work. Feel like a bit of a voyeur to be honest...
  7. Lovely shots You guys are inspiring me to dust down the old SLR and take part. Can you still get ye olde films developed?
  8. Awesome is definately the word. How lucky to have seen a true wonder of the world... Thanks for sharing
  9. Any other parents out there prepared to admit they were whatching Blue Peter this morning? They were taking part in the Alaskan Lumberjack comp. Man...Those guys are awesome!!! They were climbing those poles in, like, seconds making it look really easy, then just sliding all the way down on the strop. Mental. I haven't climbed on spikes since I was at college and it was the first of many times that year that I wished I'd enroled on the hairdressing course. Silly business. P.S. If you wanna pretend you saw it on something else, that's fine...
  10. But your spelling isn't what it was...
  11. GRUNTS?!!! Nice word. Must try and get that into conversation at some point.
  12. Possibly Mycena inclinata...?
  13. Where were they taken? I'm really getting into fungi- turning into a bit of a nerd! Maybe I should get out more...
  14. never say never, you might like it!
  15. What is it about blokes that they'd rather post a message on the web than go to the doctors?! Stop playing to your stereotype and go to the docs!! If it gets worse and you can't climb or grip a saw you'll be buggered! And have you got a vest on? You'll sit there til you eat that... Mum
  16. As I've said before, I have just finished a Nat. Cert. in Arb and yes, there are people who were on my course that are now running their own business, but I would have to agree with you that I would be concerned about the quality of the work they deliver. Surely they're just 'cutting stuff'. They know about the saw and they know how to climb but they know very little about the trees. I'm running my own landscaping and maintenance business and will do tree work if requested, but until such time as I've had a lot more experience climbing or even just groundy-ing, I'm not prepared to advertise solely as a tree surgeon. IMO, experience is worth far more than qualifications, but far better to have both. P.S. Anyone in my area want a groundy for 2 days a week, I'd be very interested. Reasonable rates of pay accepted, I won't charge you for the wit and sarcasm!!!
  17. My experience is very limited but the only one I got on with out of the many I tried was the Tree Flex, but then I know loads of people who hate it. Have you tried them all on? If you loved the TM I think you should probably get saving!
  18. Hey, We did 1 and a half days a week doing theory: science, machinery, idents, etc...all pretty basic and then 1 whole day doing pratical. We went out to a National Trust place on Exmoor to fell trees and were lucky enough to have great trees on campus to climb. Sounds like you've had a rough deal... Let me know if I can help at all
  19. Have you put fuel in it sweetheart?!!! Sorry, couldn't resist...
  20. I did a years National Certificate in horticulture (arboriculture) and in that was included CS30, 31, 38 and 39. It was both theory and practical. You're right Steve, 30 and 38 are pre-requisite for 39. From what I hear, this year they've added a chipper ticket on top. Personally I think they should also have a first aid course included.
  21. No it's not but I know the one you mean. Hill House... We felled one of the 2 cedars up there this year. Apparently due to summer limb drop. Shame. The tree in my photo is at a place called Whitly Court near Worcester. Did you study at Cannington then?
  22. OK cool. Just as long as I know what's going on. Don't like to be in the dark!! It scares me...
  23. And modest...
  24. Beautiful...
