  1. When I started at Connick 8 or 9 years ago I had no experience diriving trucks or towing trailers. I'd towed a boat a handful of times in my landy. There were loads of young lads there who drove cabstars with 6 inch chippers every day. But I with my pre 97 licence and no experience got to drive the new canter with the big new chipper.. Navigating round Londons busy residential streeets... So there are firms out there who will give someone who doesn't have a clue a 20K chipper and truck..
  2. For tree related fungi I've yet to come accross any book better than principles of tree hazard assessment and management by Lonsdale. Manual of wood Decays in trees, Weber and Mattheck, is also OK. Advice from the Fungi ID course at Tree Life was to use lots of different ones. I like google images, as you gett lots of different photo's. Some are not what they say they are but lots are pretty good.
  3. We pay an estimate based on turnover each month. I guess at the end of the year we'll get a bill or a cheque.. Only just coming to the end of our first year paying the VAT so will soon see how it's worked out. Hoping to claim back for the chipper and truck we brought just previous to becoming Vat registered as you can claim for the previous 2 or 3 years on capital purchases over 2 or 3 grand.. Hopefuly the accountant will sort it!
  4. Give him as much wood as he wants, it's worth bugger all. Same with the chip.. Even a small tree surgery business soon ends up with tons of it.
  5. Has any one done the Morgage as I like the sound of it but it's not cheap..
  6. If you are approaching the VAT threshold look into the Flat Rate scheme, we've discussed it on here before but you only pay 9% but still charge 17.5.. It still hurts, but not so bad. Going Vat registered really stings. It's fine for the comercial stuff good even, but if you do a lot of private, joe public doesn't care just wants the cheapest.. I've been working loads more but the bank balance doesn't seen to change! Also IMO it's worth paying monthly as you'll end up with a BIG bill at the end of the year. One positive side is when giving verbal quotes and the punter accepts a bit readily and you realise you've gone to low you can say plus VAT of course...
  7. I happen to have Lonsdales book on my desk: Inotus dryadeus; on oaks, decay in inner part of root system and stem base. Not significant untill late stages. Inotus hispidus; on ash, simultaneouus white rot resulting in fairly brittle fracture. Significant at early stage in ash and walnut but not significant inplanes even when decay has advanced to the stage of cavity formation..
  8. Back to the biners.. Most rock climbers I've come across won't touch the 3 ways they think their dangerous.. I do use them..
  9. Trees don't have to be there for ever, poplars grow quickly and fall apart. Plant them, preferably plant something else which can become established before you take out the poplars but there a cr@p tree when big. To mis-quote Mattheck:" Poplar is shitty tree, shitty wood, shitty design that propagates through failure" (or something like that)
  10. We did Chennai to Goa, train to Delhi, bus to Jaipur, bike to Agra, train to Varanasi bus to nepal border and bike to khatmandu, well we got a taxi up the 2400m pass, rode down the other side though never been so knackered from riding down, down, down... Nepal was a bit hilly for bicycles..
  11. Big sycamore
  12. I put a cable in today, I didn't think it would have been needed, but it had a rusty old chain grown into the wood that had once been looped round the two branches. One side of the cable had snapped the other was under a lot of preassure. I used 4 ton webbing strops and steel cable.
  13. I've not much experience, don't think its required often and have come across at least one instance where I rekon the bracing caused the twisting and tree to fail. What do people use, like, dislike any hints and tips.
  14. I was concerned about the melting point of the spectra, I used it with care and it never showed any signs of glazing. I've just checked it out, I guess I'll bin it now however..
  15. Mrtree where and when were you cycling in india? I spent 4 months riding round the southern tip and then up into Nepal for trekking.
  16. I have some (5 or 6mm) spectra rope same strength as regular 10mm line. I got it for treking in New Zealand, for use as an emergency rescue line. With a couple of krabs and some slings you can rig a harness and absail out of tricky situations. I made a prussic out of it for tree work, works fine. I don't use it as a everyday prussic because it feels to small..
  17. Any subbies in the Derby, Nottingham, Loughborough area.. We're a small expanding (hopefully) firm, looking for a pool of climbers, any level of experience welcome.
  18. The PETZL SPATHA KNIFE, it can be clipped through its pivot point into a Karabiner. The knife can be opened one handed, and will not slip closed in use. The 3" stainless steel blade has a gently curved edge for cutting line, and will resist corrosion. Every climber working with ropes should carry one! The orange one has serrated blade makes cutting rope easy. On a toy krab weighs next to nothing, and costs less than £15. Mine has been on harness at least 2 years now.

    The Talk

My misses calls sorry "I'M NOT YOUR MISSES.." any way calls it arbw@nk... or arb porn.
  20. Most of the limbs were also rotten. Logged more than we should have. I've yet to sell wood for anythink other than fire wood and it's a lot of effort milling it just to make me feel good.
  21. Ganoderma has turned the roots and much if the tree to mush, but that 2m section looks ok. What size should I mill it to?
  22. The local council we work for gets 4 firms to quote for all the works then picks the cheapest. Means the only jobs you get are the ones you under priced... Still it is work and you don't have to book it in.
  23. I often have the same dilema, I have a lump of walnut which I don't want to log.. I have a chainsaw mill but still haven't found a market for the stuff I've milled. I've some nice burred oak which has been sitting around for the last couple of years waiting for a buyer or a use.. http://www.canopytrees.co.uk/sawmill.htm
  24. Matt, That's the one we've done quite alot of work there. I'll give stu a call. Cheers
  25. Proclimber sell- Slik Dik graphite powder, phone barry and ask for some of that..
