  1. I heard this whilst driving today - well done Simon and the AA for getting in there quick and providing a response to a high profile tree issue.
  2. Ok, thanks Giles. We approach this in a different way - I'm going to re-evaluate how I do this in future. Good thread Sloth!

  5. Of course, I understand the concept of categorizing trees and sacrificing the poorer quality trees first. What we are discussing is 3rd party trees - if the trees do not belong to your client isn't it wrong to approve a plan that would damage someone else's property?

  8. High Scale does a bit of the old splicing trickery....lives near Bristol/Bath.

  10. So you would advise not to protect the rooting area of a neighbours tree if you deemed it as a 'C' category tree? If the development then trashed the roots of this tree and it died, wouldn't that be an offence - unless the roots could be proven to be an 'actionable nuisance'?

  12. Sorry Sloth, but those look like Holly leaves to me. If they are falling off then the tree is dead. Simples!

  14. Hi. Might be interested if you're paying at top whack. I'm the best climber you'll find. Give me a call some time.

  16. Yep. I don't do it myself - its one for our company Secretary to follow up.
  17. Not yet! I'll be taking action to get paid soon.
  18. Sorry, perhaps my post was unclear. What I meant was, given that planning applications often alert tree officers to a potential threat on a high value amenity tree, less reactive TPOs may be served due to the changes. Perhaps this will highlight the weaknesses in the way the TPO system is used more than anything else.
  19. I think it's just for residential homes but I am not 100% sure.
  20. The change to allow 6 metre single story extensions (rather than the current 3m) will also have an impact on privately owned trees. If a planning application is not required, high value trees in rear gardens are less likely to be identified as worthy of a TPO.
  21. Nice set of photos, thanks David. It's great to see these investigations laid out step by step. Did you attempt to clear soil away from the underside of any of the structural roots? When I have air-spaded Beech with Meripilus I have always been anxious to check the undersides of the roots as I understand the decay affects these parts first. I had not thought of using a mallet on the roots - I'll be doing that from now on, thanks!

I was getting on a bus in Fiji. I didn't see the TV footage til I got home months later. I don't know enough of the facts to say if the war was worth it or justified - I just know I hate what wars do to people.
  23. The survey is now under way and going well. I could do with an extra person on a 3 days per week basis (plus weekends if possible) until mid November. If you have a level 3 qualification and would be interested in this work please give me a call on 07866 773373. Thanks, Paul
