  1. been deadwooding in an old oak plantation today, using srt to access the crown, a fellow arbtalker who has been subbying to me who shall remain namelesswill ayers got about 30ft off the floor suddenly remembered hed left his climbing line behind. i was less than pleased with the prospect of going down to retrive his line for him...then i remembered the trusty fig8 that i sent down to him. his only punishment being he had to climb back up again so whos forgotton what, be it climbing kit, keys or dare we say chipper
  2. what you want is a chain mortiser dean most of my apprentiship when i left school was oak framing, loved it and still do, il try and dig out the photos of the one i did last summer, though it was only softwood.
  3. get some good solid windows made up from seasoned oak, that will help to stop the structure twisting to much because as its a summer house it will be lacking the weight you would have if it were a garage etc, infill betwwen the oak with studwork with good solid diagonal bracing.id normally go with seasoned softwood for this, but it depends if its going to be seen, another option is to clad the outside of the studwork with ply then tyvek over it and clad with oak, i could go on and on

  12. i wouldnt want to decend to much distance with a hitch on a single line, best to use a fig 8
  13. set your clibing system tight round the stem, install your fig 8 below your hitch and pully and descend on a single line
  14. i either use my rope guide as a false crotch to decend on in an emergency or choke my climbing line round the stem and instal a fig8 below it
