  1. Quick note about the Helmet. They have thankfully now got rid of ear defender/visor system in the picture and are now on a MSA system. Good luck to everyone in the raffle and I hope last years total to the Children's Trust can be beaten. Richard
  2. One thing could have avoided all of this and any question of liability. When you examined the tree DON'T state or advise that it should be taken down. Explain the characteristics etc. of included bark and how it can increase the potential for failure. Leave the decision with him. Included bark/multi stems on these are as common as the pigeons. If it is that large remember it has been like that for many years unless something has recently changed to increase the potential for failure.

  5. Sorted Thanks for the pm's Richard
  6. 'not as essential as a good attitude and common sense.' 'Anyone expecting £1000's for an easy few days every now and again need not apply.'
  7. Hi My son has just had an op today and will be out of action for some time. As a result there may be an opportunity for some part time groundy work in future weeks/months. We are an Arb Association Approved Contractor based just outside Penrith. It could be an opportunity for someone coming into the industry to gain some good experience. CS30/31 and chipper tickets would be beneficial but not as essential as a good attitude and common sense. The reason for part time is because I am also a freelance instructor and can be away running training courses. Anyone expecting £1000's for an easy few days every now and again need not apply. Possible start as early as next week if the right person crops up! Pm initially if interested. Richard
  8. Could be in need of an extra groundy (with 38) on Monday and Tuesday next week in Carlisle. PM if interested Richard
  9. Can you not get it that people are allowed to have an opinion without constantly arguing with it? People are thankfully free to have an opinion in the same way someone can go off and work for someone else/himself if he is not happy. Nobody knows everything or has all the right answers.
  10. Sounds like running a business then so they should no how the boss feels A freelance can always say no, their choice. Good post Andy. Gives the perfect solution - if you don't like it get off your arse and be a boss
  11. I understand fully and agree Steve but if I put my prices up to where they should be I would be working part time at best, not sitting booking in work for December. I believe we are ALL worth a lot more but believing in something and actually being able to implement it are unfortunately to different things in reality. Reality sucks.
  12. The firm with a climber on £100 also gets a week full of work OH and if the post about tight employers was aimed at me I actually pay one climber up to £200/day because he is worth it. Then again if I'm cutting a hedge I pay my son £50 to help tidy up BUSINESS nothing more or less
  13. Read the last line of my post very slowly and carefully!!!! £500/week = £25K/year. Not bad in the current economic climate even buying your own ppe. If you only end up with 50% of that being self -employed get a better accountant. The point of my post was a business can only pay what is economically viable to pay. I an not saying that the OP is being paid right of wrong just that there are many more factors than a personal opinion of your own worth.
  14. Seems like there is a division to me between those that understand running (and staying in) a business and those who don't. If the business owner cant increase day rates because it is not financially viable to do so he wont/shouldn't. If he can increase it because for example you are so good it is increasing his production/turnover then he should. Don't forget money is and will be tight for a long time to come. £500 for a weeks work is better than £150 for a day with the rest of the week sat at home. For the record I pay a good climber £120/day and provide company t-shirt/fleece/saws/employees liability insurance/work/transport to site/job sheet/risk assessments/etc/etc/etc. To be able to turn up in the morning and go home 5 - 8 hrs later with £120 is dream land/hr compared to what I am earning.

Was thinking min 20 up to 30 max so maybe not too far out!
  18. Got 14 syc coming out this week. I would normally keep the timber for myself but prob too much for me to shift economically. They are being stripped out/topped and then the poles felled. I guess there will be getting on for a wagon load of stems. What sort of money would you think I should get/tonne. Access is good (on a works site but basically as roadside) Ta. p.s. N Cumbria

    price

Nice one if you can get it! £500+/man! - dreamland round here. I agree that price should be per job, but you still need a basic day rate to start form which should cover wages, overheads, etc, etc. It is then knowing your job and the customer well enough to put a price on the job. Cash flow is massively important - much better to have regular work than sporadic injections of money.
  20. No offence, but how many 'trees' do you actually do? When we are on a dismantle most customers, neighbours, etc comment on the level of knowledge and skill needed to do the job. Never known anyone say they could have done it themselves.
  21. Sorted Thanx
  22. Pete

Thanks for the offer but got sorted. If anything crops up in the future I will give you a shout.

    Thanks

    Richard

  24. Could be in need of a groundy with climbing ticket for a job this Wed. Anyone interested send me a pm. Rich
  25. Like above I think you need to avoid overlapping any practical demonstrations with seminars. If it is going to be held where I think then there is also a great opportunity for people to get up to date on some of their ground based work, something that is often overlooked. Some LANTRA instructor felling demo's, etc might just open a few peoples eyes as far as CPD on that side is concerned.
