Edit: My mistake, maybe the chipper was included. My £650 was just what 2 on saws and 2 labourers would be locally if they were decent.

4 people for 650? Where is the profit ? Going to cost 500plus a day if they are on minimum wage before saws, ppe transport etc

I have climbed some absolutely horrible Ash trees over the last year. My justification was simple - I could not get a MEWP to a single one of  them - why take the risk if you don’t need too?

Self employment has been the best choice for me, as I found being an employee frustrating and oppressive. In many ways, like others, I am not employable.

Would I ever work for someone again? Very unlikely, but I never say never - it would have to be an exceptional company to tempt me.

We have been running the Stihl comms for nearly a year now. 
 

So far, in addition to the increase in safety, we have noticed a massive decrease in stress, due to the lack of shouting and misunderstanding. Increase in productivity and we have also been able to bring climbers on quicker, as we can quietly and calmly talk them through tasks outside there comfort zone, or simply give them helpful feedback.

It is easy to become a gobshite and try and micro manage everything when running a site, however if I feel like I am, I simply turn the mic off and only reply to questions .

Nothing wrong with 3 strand for rigging, just use it appropriately. I buy it 200m at a time cheap from trawler suppliers and melt it for fun. 
I think you need another LOLER inspector to be honest.

Refresher training is a positive in my books. I did last year and things change, you forget things and what is the cost of doing 2 days every 5 years, to keep you refreshed on both aerial and ground based units?

It’s been 29 years since I did my original tickets and keeping up to date by upskilling and refresher training has done me no harm at all.

That looks like a lot of hard work- good job.  Was it decayed or did the customer have the usual obsession with trees being too big and need “controlling” 😆

There was a Panorama program about it and even the BBC conceded that it was an unmitigated disaster. If I remember correctly, it is so inefficient that the emissions and associated carbon produced would be reduced if it was reverted to coal.

The euro gaffs place you even further from the stem and make it very difficult to use your heel or toe to brace yourself. I will see if I still have mine in the shed from years ago- you can have them if I do as I hated them with a passion. I have climbed on longs for years now and it was worth the little extra time getting used to them.

HS2 was just not needed in a country this size. Extra rail capacity-yes, and needed urgently, but building a scar across the landscape at an insane environmental and social cost - no f***ing way.

It was always a project for the huge civil engineering companies to make an obscene amount of money on. Unwanted, badly planned and funded and delivered irresponsibly. 

Arbs are usually slow and very inefficient in the woods. (There are always exceptions, but very few). I would pay a top cutter £250 and most arbs would struggle to earn £150.

The proximity of these trees does not make them a hazard. Have they been inspected ?

You could have the trees inspected by a qualified arborist and a report written. If the report indicates that the trees are in a dangerous condition you could present this to the local council - they have powers to deal with these issues when the land owner is absent or not known and there is a genuine threat/danger.
