  1. Generally we don't slumber ours, but in the recent extended cold snap we put a shovel of solid fuel on the wood embers last thing at night and just riddle the grate first thing and add some kindling and a log on top and open the secondary air to get the embers glowing and ignite the wood. Most of the winter we just light the stove for the evening.
  2. I've spent time reading through this, and skipping the tangents and spats, and totally agree. I am however a bit of a log goblin myself and always ask if I think it belongs to someone or if on common ground use the adage its sometimes easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
  3. Thanks for the comments here especially on lecky saws, I have one, an Einhelle and those comments have been very helpful to me, thanks again. I only use it for fallen trees and limbs that no-one seems to care for to feed my log burner 😁
  4. I notice that poplar has only been mentioned once, however I have lots that have matured among other trees and grown tall and are now toppling (yay!) and I quite like it, left a couple of days in rounds it cracks enough for you to know where to start splitting. The bark comes off easily enough on the larger lumps which helps dry out even more, six months and its 7% but picks up if the air is very moist. The bark cut into 1-2" strips and dried makes good kindling too. Downside is it isn't a hot burner or last long but it's free and plentiful here and it only has to power a 5kw Arada so happy days !
