Anyone at home ?

Attempted to re-reduce this monolith last spring, but came across an inhabitant at the time, so backed off.

After it was rudely awoken, this little fury (think it's a pip) decided to flutter off to another tree/site.

We then informed the relevant parties & drew up another plan of attack.

So decided to leave it until this winter, when we thought that there would be nothing roosting.

The site was assesed for additional habitat & a letter from Natural England then gave us the go ahead to bring the height down.

Brought in our local bat girl to help give it a good looking over.

After probing the nooks, crannies & behind the bark with the optic, nothing larger than a host of harlequins were found, so then the loose bark was stripped off prior to the top being felled out.

I'd imagine some may see this as being a bit ott, but it's what's deemed as appropriate & sustainable habitat mangement.

& within the law.

Do you not assess every nook, crevice, loose piece of loose bark for bat habitat potential ???

Really..............:001_tongue:

The letter was a bit of ass covering as it was not 'just' potential but actually being used.

How high up your agenda is looking at a tree as potential habitat?

Do you record any assessment ?
