Adding a small hydraulic oil cooler?

Hi, I'm looking for any suggestions for a small hydraulic oil cooler, new or used.

I've got a hydraulic track barrow that I'm running an extra service off, but feel it needs an oil cooler. Later models of the machine are fitted with a small hydraulic oil cooler (with fan) by moving the battery to a new location, which seems the best place for it.

The space for it to fit in is a max of 280mm tall and 210mm wide.

So I'm wondering if there's any machines like mini/micro diggers, chippers etc that I might get 2nd hand parts for, with a similar sized radiator and fan?

I would have thought that any oil cooler would do on the return side that will fit. Motor bike engine oil cooler etc..

Have a look at motor bike radiator and fan combos.

Why do you feel it needs one? Are there signs of over heating?

Have a look here and check some temperatures as you may be worrying too much:

have a look on ebay for a terex mbr 71 roller they have a neat little oil cooler for the aux hydraulics the fan might be a bit more difficult to get you would need a motor that would use the return flow from the valve block

Thanks, it's ok the machine has electrics so 12v fan would work :001_smile:

Yes I had been looking and wondering if an engine oil cooler would do, there's some lovely cheap ones on ebay, but they all seem to be too long to fit

I don't know how hot is too hot, I've adapted the machine to run a log splitter, and after about half an hour of use the flat face quick release couplings were too hot to hold! I don't want to boil the system! :001_huh:

Above 40 degrees will feel hot to your touch, but most Hydraulic systems will work to around120 degrees without problem. The boil point of oil is much higher than water. Measure the oil temp and we can then advise.

How about a large ish bore steel pipe fitted to the return?

Have it made to wind back & forth in the space you have.

Even a long flexi pipe would work as long as the bore is not causing more heat to be made.

Re the hot fitting, is all the pipe work & tank hot too? If not it might be that the fittings are too restrictive for the flow.
