Folks - a damson tree is coming down later this week or start of next.

 

No idea if it's suitable for your needs, only reason I thought to post was there was a couple of burrs on it.

 

DBH is 31cm, Location is Ayrshire.

Do you know if it had ever had a decent crop of damsons Archie?

It's had a crop each year for the past few years - mediocre would be the best description though

Archie. I'd be really interested in milling the main trunk if it is sound. How soon would it need to be removed from the site after felling? Would there be time for you to photograph the ends to see the colour and check it isn't rotten. Been looking for a reasonable sized plum tree for a few years.......

Where in the highlands are you , we have one near huntly used to crop well, but last few years snow at blossom/ fruit set time has put paid to that

Very desirable, shame your so far away. Even the limbs would interest a wood turner, shame your so far away

 

It does crack very quickly so the ends need to be sealed ASAP

they are not always that great, it depends on the tree. i have a 12"-15" one from down my road and it was mostly sap, only about 5-6" of colourful heart in the middle and sadly it splits to hell despite my best efforts to keep it whole. being rough turned and well sealed didn't do the trick. i had at least a 50% rate of loss.
