Thanks chaps for the encouragement and have not forgotten other means of getting work. Lots comes through recommends. Some testimonies would be a good idea. Have some on our Facebook page but Facebook has proved pretty useless for work.

Not that you can see them but I have lots of keywords written in the background white on white as nephew said this helped.

Whats a proper footer and not sure what google local listings are?

I've had a look at the source code and, as others have said, the code is so far out of date that google will not present it to devices that cannot handle the older html standards.

There are a few quick fixes you could do to what you have:

Your home page is titled "Liz's Logs" and, as expected if you search for Liz's Logs you come up number one.

Any other search including a location will be disadvantaged because you haven't told the search engines that this might be important. PL20 and Tavistock are mentioned in the home page text so they get a better placement but if you don't mention Devon you cant really expect the search engine to rank it - if you don't think it important, they wont.

A suggested title for the home page would be "Liz's Logs of Devon - seasoned logs delivered around Tavestock and the PL20 area"

Where geography is mentioned in the page it is highlighted by font size and bold. It should be in a heading to give it some importance above the rest of the text.

Get a link from a related firewood suppliers website with the alt tag Logs Devon or suchlike. This will re-enforce the prime purpose and geographic location.

If you check all the page titles for opportunities to better describe the important aspects of the business it will help but the bottom line is the mass of devices now used to access t'internet is hitting older websites hard.

Best advice would be to redo it on Wordpress or similar where all the access device problems are continually addressed for you - you just add the content but most of the above 'clarity' still needs to be thought about.

Facebook: Unless you pay for posts you will not have any success.

White on White: AN ABSOLUTE NO NO. Hiding text or links in your content to manipulate Google is seen as deceptive and is a serious violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. Hidden text (such as keywords) include

Using white text on a white background

Locating text behind an image

Using CSS to position text off-screen

Setting the font size to 0

Hiding a link by only linking one small character—for example, a hyphen in the middle of a paragraph

In all probability your site will now be blackballed and good luck with any appeal even if you fix the indiscretions. Consider the URL to be so tarnished it is scrap.

I suppose the silver cloud is that you really must start again so as per last, get a properly hosted wordpress website with a new URL. It's not hard and lots of help is available on youtube. Last words of advice; don't let your nephew anywhere near the new website!

To add to Marko's advice...

Make it mobile optimised, which using wordpress will be easy.

Write more content, there just isn't enough for google to see IMO.

As above make sure all title tags are descriptive, this is what people see in the SERPs (search engine results page).

On an aesthetics note, please use the same font on all pages. This is easy when using wordpress as its harder to change it from page to page.

''Not that you can see them but I have lots of keywords written in the background white on white as nephew said this helped. '' remove these, this is known as bad seo and google can see this and it could be one of the many reasons your rankings have gone down.

Beat me to it. That's a 90's thing to do and Marko is right it'll be real hard to get that url to a decent position again
