Echo cs501sx.......what a little cracker

yeah I prefer the filter in the CS-450, looks like the pleated type you get in a car. AFAIK you can get an alternative flocked filter for the CS-501, pretty sure I saw it on a US website.

As I read the IPL, it only shows one air filter option, but that may of course be a mistake?

Anyway, there are disadvantages with "flocked" air filters: 1) They let in less air, some times not enough for full performance of the saw. 2) They are a PIA to keep clean.

Be aware that the dust that appears inside the filter and in the carb etc. may be getting around the filter somehow, and not trough the filter material.

The alternative flocked filter = the one from CS-490ES/500ES. They're fully interchangeable.

And yes, the flocked ones are nearly 4 times as dense, so helps a lot in dusty/dry conditions but isn't such fun to clean especially if maintenance is not done often.

The original nylon version is better to be kept clean (same could be said about any filter of any engine :) ) - It's generally a filter's nature. When the bigger part of the filter area gets clogged the increased vacuum starts sucking the tiniest particles in. Some of them are caught on a spitback oil film in the carb while the rest take the piston gloss away and form specific carbon deposits where you don't want it :D

Going back to the 501sx.....

Every time I go to clean the air filter I take it off and find fine dust inside the air filter and inside the carb.

I have taken it back to the dealer to look at and they have said it is due to me not cleaning it regularly enough and also running the chain with the depth gauges too high or a blunt chain.

Any saw can and will get fine dust in to the carb if the filter isn't cleaned often enough. Regularity of cleaning is dictated by the type of filter not "it never 'appened on me other saw, innit!"

Your dealer right about finer dust due to blunt chain and/or depth gauge height.

  • 9 months later...

Well an update on my 501 which I have had for about a year now.

About 8 weeks ago I had to remove the clutch bell to mend the brake band which had popped out of place.

The clutch bell is held on by a nut and washer instead of a circlip like still and husky.

Put it all back together and obviously didn't tighten the nut enough as when I next used it it fell to bits- my fault completely.

I thought no bother I'll order a new nut and washer from local dealer.

Dealer said 1 week to get it.

Not there after 1 week or two or three, or four I ring the dealer every week he's not too bothered tho.

After 6 weeks I ring echo uk who say the nut is in stock and blame the dealer.

They suggest a local dealer who say yes can get you one tomorrow.

I week later I get a phone call saying it is not in stock and won't be there till the 8 th of august!

I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER ECHO MACHINE AGAIN!!

Should have bought a dollar ( sorry shavey!)

Do you find a lot of fine sawdust gets inside the air filter around the carb? I have two and both seem really bad for this so I think a phone call to the dealer is in order!

Couple of quotes from Will Heal below.

... 2 slight bad points, the air filter lets fine dust into it, can't see any holes and it doesn't fit poorly...

I've got the 390-esx, same filter type. Fine dust accumulates around the carb and filter, but not inside it.

I'm fairly careful when cleaning around the intake, choke on, then use a soft paint brush to clean most of the crud off before removing the filter for a proper clean.

Very light smear of oil between the two halves of the filter and on the air intake where the filter fits on, make sure its pushed fully home, refit the top cover.
