and you cant tow over 750kgs without a trailer licence on the road, madness

Not meaning to derail, but as ive found out recntly, thats not entirely true.

You can tow more so long as the trailer is not capable of carrying a load that combined with the towing vehicle, does not exceed 3500kgs.:sneaky2:

you will need speed rated trailer to go behind mog, fastrac or 50kph plus tractor. tyres need to be rated for high speed use, brakes will need to be air and commercial spec and running gear ie axles will have to be a cetain type.

the old bill and vosa are tightening up on it all, down here they are quite hot on it after a wheel came apart on a spreader towed by a fastrac doing 80kph and it killed a motorist.

yes, but the trailer and load can't be more than so many % of the weight of the vehicle (or something like that) so it's still only a little trailer

Yes you are correct Chris, but with say a truck with a MAN of 2000kgs, its perfectly legal for a post '97 license holder to tow a chipper weighing 1200kgs.:sneaky2:

Yep, that's how i'd understood it - just that finding a vehicle light enough is the hard bit. We've been having right bother with Vosa over this sort of thing - it seems to depend on who you talk to there as to what you can/can't do :blushing:

Unless we're within a 50 k radius of the yard, we can't tow anything at all behind our transit because it's 3.5tonne gvw and to do that we had to have a tacho exemption - to put a tacho in is something like £900 or so - already had one Vosa prohibition notice - was 400 miles away from the yard and they thought they were being nice by gibving us an exclusion which let us drive directly back to the yard at no more than 40mph.
