Hitch Climber or ZigZag? Personal Opinions

In that case enjoy the zigzag, combined with a cambium saver or pulley and 11.7mm rope its fantastic.

Only thing id say is im not confident using the zigzag as a waiste anchor when chogging down stems, lateral loading can help stress fracture the links.

Where did you read about the last bit as it sounds like fact rather than something you have just made up?

Its common sense,if you put strain on the side of the links they are more liable to break or deform.

Im not stating they will break,i just prefer not to use the zigzag as a waiste anchor as i feel it could deform the links into bending or place excess forces upon the links

This is not any sort of reference from petzl just my opinion

I thought that, and for a while I used a prussik for that reason. But now use an adjustable friction saver with my zig zag as a back up below my side strop. I keep it loose but it would choke the stem and hold me should I cut through my strop

I still use a prussik as a waist anchor, but i know the setup you mean,i just dont have an adjustable cambium saver is all,if i did that would be ideal yeah

Right OK, its just that you put it like its some kind of fact not to use while chogging down!

Although dont really know why you think it is getting deformed as it always looks fine to me.:001_huh:

In answer to the OP its a ZZ for me, a lot let messing about and is always consistent. Although that is probably because im lazy and I cba fiddling around with different knots when using a HC:laugh1:

I thinks its just with the mk 1&2 both prone to stress fractures its always been on my mind not to put any excess lateral load on to the zigzag-even though its a mk3.

Maybe a bit of paranoia on my part

I dont know why some people feel they have to chose between hitch climber or zigzag, both are now affordable so why not have both and switch between the two depending on your needs on the particular climb

What situations would you say one is preferable over the other?

Dry days im more prone to use zigzag, wet days i find it creeps sometimes.

Ive noticed on slimey wet ropes it creeps a lot too,i use 11.7mm tachyon.

Tbh most days im climbing i use the hitch climber, but again some days i cant be arsed tying hitches, gettin my gloves jammed in the hitch so i ll go to the zz.

Ive no real preference just i find both have there places in my kit bag-dependant on the job, weather and mood.

Sometimes i find the hitch climber can jam up too, which the zz doesnt do.

Just my opinion

For me I'd say that any situation where I'm likely to knock the top of the device it's safer to use the HC.

Congested conny bashing being one example.
