What's going on in your avatar pic?

We were working on one of the last big dead Elms in our area.

The saw(Husky 372xp) got trapped in the kerf despite the use of step cuts.

There was an old stone wall beneath the stem, which meant there was no way that log could be allowed to free fall. The climber attempted to slide the log in the required direction to miss the wall.

The log was very heavy, anyone who has worked on Elm will know what I'm talking about. The bark was flaking away and the spikes weren't grabbing. Trying to move the log one handed whilst holding the saw with the other was impossible, so the saw had to take a dive in the interests of saving the wall. It worked. The saw was fine.

And yes, that is another log jammed in the crotch below.

Here's some more pics to put it in context.....

my guess is the chunk went prematurely and he dropped the saw in a hurry so he could steer the log where he wanted it.

Yeah, nearly right....the chunk needed 2 hands to guide it the right way, what your seeing in the pic is the moment just after the climber had pushed it 2 handed and quickly grabbed the stem with one hand to force it round even more.
