poplar

i have the chance soon of quite a lot of poplar, i cant seem to find info on it for its use as a firewood. i know it will come under softwood. any advice appreciated tia

if it is dry it will burn, but it will take a while, holds a lot of water mate as you probably know, get it split and stacked asap

It is classed as Hardwood. Burns well, good heat, but must be split and dried properly.

If you look under the drying billets thread, you can see some beautifully split and stacked poplar billets from Davetaz.

it is worth the the effort to process it then?? should get a nice tidy pile from the job then!

it cuts like butter mate, never split any personally but my dad split and burnt a big one i took down for him years ago. if i remember he said it was great to work with

it doesnt sound like a bad kind to work with! the plan is to split it as soon as they start felling them and just stockpile it. how long to season roughly?? thanks for replys

well you are going into colder weather, but get it off the ground, covered and somewhere windy, then i dont see why not ready for next chrimbo. depends on next summer i suppose.

Makes excellent firewood when dry and even better kindling. I used some ony wood burning stove last winter that had been seasoned for about 8 months off the ground and covered.

This was felled in March I believe, split in April and May, is very wet to start with but dries pretty quick. I've been using it at home in logburner for hot water since July. No problems with it at all once it is dried/seasoned. We split into 3' billets as Ed mentioned and stack up to 6'-7' high with a cover on top to keep most of the rain off. Started to split some down in to kindling as well.

Splits easily especially when green and produces nice straight billets which makes stacking so much easier.

Saw it to size when ordered on HP Eagle Bench Saw
