Have you got a rib support?

Usually elastic with Velcro.

They're not the be all and end all, but it helped me a bit in the first few weeks back after busted ribs.

I had the same concerns as you about painkillers, but was told that taking Ibuprofen is beneficial.

Had a few problems with same in my rugby days. Repeat injury. Went back too soon and it reoccurred.

In the end, 3 months + gentle physio. I think you've got to step back until it's healed otherwise it never will.

 

I'm driving the machines etc but even lifting a full kettle makes it twinge a bit now; bit of a worry.

Suffered three broken ribs ever,all through work, very painful, really limits you to what you can do, sleeping can be difficult, no cure except rest and taking things a bit easier, lucky for me that i am pretty quick healer and suffered no pain since healed.
