Maybe, but that statement is as generalizing as me saying all Japanese trucks (in this country at least) are designed purely for hairdressers and the like who are more concerened with Image, comfort and style than just an out an out purpose designed workhorse like the defender is.

 

I have an 18 year old 110 180k on the clock and is used daily for towing my digger and trailer 3.5t plus tools round hilly Dartmoor. In the last 7 years, NO major parts have been replaced, it has not once let me down to the point that i couldn't go to work in it and in those 7 years have spent no more than 2k on repairs- which included the clutch/labour for at 130k. I could sell it now for the same i purchased it for 7 years ago- THATS cheap motoring.

 

Landrover il admit have shocking comfort and fit and finish, however their reputation for lack of reliabilty- usually comes down to over abuse and the number of cheap after market parts fitted by DIY mechanics and other meddling and chopping and changing that goes on due to their modular design.

 

I,ve fairly looked at other trucks- I can see their appeal as general all rounders/ doubling up as family wagons- but in my job they'd look banged up in no time at all- Defenders seem to absorb knocks and scapes much better- lack of plastic and the timeless aluminium just takes it better than steel panels.

I spoke with a rep at Toyota, supposedly the new Hilux will not be offered with the big diesel engine because of EU emissions! Looks like I'll be hanging on to the 3.0L for a while longer..

 

Dya reckon they'll be hitting diesel owners with a massive pollution tax?.... can't see people changing otherwise.

The model I got came with a reversing camera. Never felt the overwhelming need for a reversing camera before, but it comes in damm handy for reversing onto a chipper, the towbar is clearly visible on the screen and you can see exactly when its underneath the tow hitch

I've got one on my navara too they are great. They help with parallel parking too.

Yes and no I like it because you can see exactly how much more room you have to go backwards. In my last truck I was forever parking miles away from stuff as I did not really know where the back was.

The projected position lines do help a bit as well

Give it a couple of months and you will wonder how you managed without it!!

Fitted reverse sensors to our xtrail a few days ago... beep, beep, beep beep, beeeeep, beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

On the long beep the tow bar is a few cm's off the ball hitch.

And yeah a reverse camera is great too but only if the lens is clean and with the sunlight in the right position.

Yeah, i've always been crap telling where the back is actually. Usually end up opening the door and sticking my head out when im reversing up against a wall or barrier or something
