trailer maintenance

Not really a help thread but I thought I'd share

Yesterday I had a bearing collapse on me coming back home from work, trailer full of wood and equipment. The wheel rode off ahead of me down the street and all in full view of several people ( very embarrassing ) .

Well enough of that chat, just a reminder to check the bearings periodically for wear and grease. All told it's gonna cost me about 60 quid in parts ( two pair of races and Castle nuts ) for my small trailer and my labour but for some of you with these big piece's of equipment and twin axle Ifors the bearings can get expensive but that's cheaper than a accident or a breakdown recovery

Yea, always a good to check wheel nuts once in a while..

I was driving through town one Sunday morning and just as I approached the lights, the front side of my van collapsed into the road.. for a second I didn't know what the heck was goin on.. Then I looked out the window to see my front tire heading into the lights....

Thank god its early Sunday I thought, this could of been very embarrassing in rush hour traffic...

Then there was a friend of mine who borrowed his trailor out an it unhitched and ran into an old lady.. got jailed for that he did...

So yea, check your trailers an tires every now an then....

2002 I had an accident with a defender and 16ft tandem ifor Williams. I was the driver, both passengers hospitalised.

Went to court for it. I didn't get charged for it but the boss did for lack of maintainance and records.

Before anyone jumps on their high gee gee in a hi vis flapping arms about there was a realistic non usual circumstance in this occasion.

The crash was caused by broken leaves in one of the springs.

Need checking periodically.

Things will still fail. But if the paperwork is there your less negligent, as my ex boss found out.
