Can someone advise me please? I want to reduce this Magnolia by about a third, in height as well as width. How hardy are they? Is this something I should leave to the experts or could I take my hedgetrimmer to it without fear of killing it?

do it by hand, and read up about pruning techniques. i've seen too many bad pruning jobs. magnolia reacts vigourously to pruning so care is required to achieve a good, balanced result.

No problem with chopping that; the traditional time is March once the risk of hard frost has passed. As said beware the regrowth; you can easily end up with lollipops.
