as far as I am aware for the better part of ten years now and on a fair few car engines the alternator does not control the battery light on your dash direct, the ecu passes the message on etc.

gone are the days of kiss engineering.

Lucas acr series and bosch alt's that lasted for ages.

Just had a battery light problem on our ka. The alternator is a pig to get out. I got a regulator off ebay and just bolted that on the alternator in situ. It's cured it. I didn't have other issues apart from headlights fluctuating in beam strength.

Check your main earth on the battery is good connections are clean and tight both ends

There may also be an earth from engine to chassi/body work check this aswell.

Great answer, you need a decent ground always even it its not the fault here.

Old mechanic splained this to me, fuel pump, guy didn't even look, just said ground, sure enough ground to frame was nfg.

Update on this,

The light has been intermittent ever since without ever really causing a problem.

Until this morning when I tried to start it and it would turn over fine but never start, as if the immobiliser was dodgy, tried the spare key- no change.

Disconnected the battery for 30 mins- no change.

I saw that several other kangoo owners have had a similar experience, which was put down to dodgy relays, So i tested all the relays, no problems there.

Then miraculously it started so I went straight to the renault dealer, who after a lot of Gaellic shrugging decided it must be the alternator, which seems fishy to me?

Is the immobliser so sensitive that such a small drop in voltage would kick it into action and prevent the engine from starting? (the battery was reading 12.4v at the time and 14.3v whilst running)

I dont mind changing the alternator if it cures the problem, but i dont want to throw good money after bad if it is likely to also need a new immobiliser and/or ECU?

Those voltages show a good battery and the alternator charging. I'd suspect an earth fault or loose/corroded connections on the starter.

Check drive belt tension, alternator connections, starter connection and earth. Possibly earthed from negative to wing and maybe one from engine to bulkhead. Possibly. Not sure on earth locations on your model

Further update on my kangoo woes.

Towing yesterday, loud noise like a tyre blowing, massive loss in power, feels like its running on 3 cylinders, running lumpy and feels 'geared down'

Im thinking an injector blowing a seal? No obvious signs under bonnet. HELP!
