On big trees I will normally decide which side of the hinge in under compression and cut that side first, cutting as close too the back of the hinge as I feel is safe and then move to the tension side of the hinge and cut until it starts to go. QUOTE]

Ditto.

Mark it out at the back like Tommer said.

Keep practicing at every possible opportunity. Imagine every time you fell a tree or a pole it was the biggest tree and you had to get it right on the money and there was no margin for error.

When I was newcomer, my workmate and I used to mark with sticks on customers lawns and the like to see who could correctly guess the height of the tree and get the crown between the markers.

It became quite competetive and our confidence and ability grew, ultimately

leading to some very early finishes. :sneaky2::biggrin:

practice, and caring helps. most of the time you can get away with a sloppy hinge, and if you are using a blunt saw this isnt going to help. put in your gub, come forward and look at it, fix it if you have too, straighten it up. but when you are doing something big or with a lot of lean or especially winching then you need to get it right.
