Apprenticeships

No, I'm after taking on a ' PROPER ' apprentice. Just trying to find out the facts etc. I've found that I will need to pay them £165 per week. 7.30 - 4.30, 5 days a week.

Just trying to work out if it's worth doing, or if it'll be better to just carry on using subbies.

Before you all say, subbies will know what there doing, they'll earn me more etc etc etc... I already know this.

I wouldn't do it to be a reliable source of labour as there hardly ever there what with sick days, holidays and collage weeks. I wouldn't do it again.

I employ 2 guys on paye and take work experience guys from the local collage have 1x first year and 1x second year which I pay a minimum wage but they get good work experience to be able to pass there course.

The best way I found is to get someone who is a bit down and out, 16/17ish flunked at school, been in a bit of bother with the the cops, not had the luckiest of upbringings. But is a good lad at heart (this is the key).

Take him in and explain if you work hard I'll give you minimum wage but I'll teach you how to be a tree surgeon in 3 ish years. Hopefully he'll appreciate the work you put in and you'll get the benefit the other end.

And who is paying for any training? to pay for tickets there is over 2k straight away.

Yes i paid for there training. Including chipper, chapter 8, and climbing, prob nearer £5k. But if you get the right guy he'll be grateful, appreciative and you'll get that money back but having him apart of your business.

After you've got him climbing you can start paying him well then you've got a guy trained how you want him and hopefully cause you've been the one to take a chance he'll stick around.

Just my way, I like to give guys a chance that I wish I was given.

That's fair enough andy but after the 5k you have spent what happens in 6 months when he wants to go elsewhere?

You take on another young lad and spend the same again, or you don't use that business model and pay a lad with all the tickets more per day than you pay a young lad per week.

I agree eggs and having had it done to me (not for 5k mind) I would only employ with full tickets or go the official apprentice route, on going training is different and i do pay for that but only after a reasonable length of time.
