It seems to me that both trucks have a good reputation, no inherent problems, and the differences are minimal.

It's really down to your gut instinct as to which you feel is the better condition truck.

I have a Toyota hilux. It has got 173000 miles on the clock and I bought it with 60000. Only replaced brake pads and the rear exhaust box. Next service is a cam belt and complete oil changes but that's part of owning a truck. It hasn't missed a beat and with Goodrich allterain tyres it honestly goes everywhere. You can lock the rear differential so the rear wheels get 25% of the power each. This is not the same in an unmodified defender. I previously had a defender which had a new engine, clutch, bearings in the gearbox, wheel bearings ect ect, when I researched which truck to get I all pointed to the hilux. All the other trucks had major faults like worping heads, axles cracking, leaf springs snapping and burning through clutches. I would recommend a hilux if you can find one.

I've had a 2005 ranger (same as the Mazda) for 3-4 years, it had done 100k when I bought it, is pushing 160k now. It regularly tows north of 2.5 tonnes (not fast mind, but it doesn't complain) and has been thoroughly abused by a multitude of drivers. With a set of mud terrain tyres it goes pretty much anywhere sensible - it's first winter was spent on a very steep wet Welsh moorland and it went everywhere the defender did. They are very basic (especially when compared to your Navaras) but I can't fault mine. I don't have any Mitsubishi experience though, so can't comment there. People go on about hilux's but my only personal experience of them hadn't been great tbh - they have their weaknesses too. Clarkson has a lot to answer for there!
