Hi all,

Just wondering if any one in the Derbyshire area would be willing to take me on for work experience 1 day a week on a thurs or fri? Would prefer a small, even one gang company. Have been working else where but not been learning anyting other than chipping and raking!!!

Any thing appreciated past that.

Thanks in advance

Mike

As said that is were you start....but there comes a time when you do need to progress...main question is though how long have you been a brash drager and general fetcher/carrier and cleaner upper....if 5mins you need to stick at it....if for a couple of years then time to move on..have you got your basic chain saw tickets? If not I suggest you get that sorted first.this is how most guys on here started and most now run there own successful tree surgery/ and or landscaping business.

Well that's what you want but I see no mention of what you offer.

Experience, qualification, do you drive, do you have transport?

The more you add the better your chances get.

In a sense I disagree with this. If the guy wants to become a climber and has all the relevant tickets and equipment then brash dragging and raking isn't gonna get you any closer to your goal. Yes you'll learn a bit by watching a climber but brash dragging is just common sense and nothing to do with climbing, for me, there's nothing quite like getting stuck in and learning first hand. When I first started 3 years ago I got my tickets on my own having known nothing about the trade then cracked on. I went on with a local company but informed them what I wanted to do and every occasion there was a job I could climb on I climbed, however, i did this on a groundy wage of £60p/d. He needs to specify what quals he has and what he wants to do and find a company that's willing to take him on with those conditions. If I didn't get the chance I did I wouldn't be anywhere close to where I am now.

My advice would be for him to phone round local company's, explain his position, qualifications and goals etc and see what he can arrange.

Whilst it's important to express an ambition to climb, you can't expect to be put on the fun stuff until you've proven that you're willing and capable to do the basic stuff first. Nobody is gonna respect a climber who hadn't worked his way up to that position.

A decent climber will have worked with and watched other climbers for a while. You need to know how things work on the deck. Clearing branches, anticipating what the climber will need/do next, how to competently run the ropes from below (no small skill).

Once you have all that down to a good level then you can start to appreciate what being a good climber involves.

It can take years to become a solid groundy. It's a profession in itself. It'll take even longer to become a good climber. Be patient. You think the decent climbers out there turned up on their first day and started swinging about up 80' trees?
