I thought those were 2 way? As in depress the back then open?

I know the ones you mean, but if you look at the pic, there's a bit of metal beneath the gate. You depress that, then the back, then the gate.

I have an ISC swivel 3 way snap hook on my lanyard. I love it, much easier than a normal 3 way crab.

Yes Joe has it right, I find depressing the bottom piece with my little finger and the back with the palm then opening the gate with my forefinger easier than the lift and twist then open of the other type.

the double fishermans does cinch up ok on an eye, I'm a chicken and so like to leave at least an inch tail, could probably cut it shorter if it was properly bounce tested.

Even better if you know someone to splice the snap hook onto the new lanyard rope

I learned to splice specifically for that reason.

You'll have most of it. Patience and a good variety of swear words are a good start.

Welding wire, measuring tape, scissors, masking tape, large needle, whipping twine.

Samson have some good instruction vids on their site.
