Hybrid Power Generators

Don't think they are all a waste of time, I got 2 solar thermal panels fitted on my place about 8 years ago, they have been brilliant, in the summer I no longer have to light my wood burner and open the windows just so that I can have a hot shower. In the winter it gives a water a nice preheat so the woodburner puts the heat quicker into the radiators rather than bringing the hot water cylinder up to 60 deg C.

So, you have two solar panels on your roof, who paid for em, you or me an everyone else?...

putting aside any suspected subsidy, why would you heat up the house just to take a shower in summer, theres some inefficiency going on there..

better take a cold shower if your asking me, nice an bracing, puts hairs on your chest...

I'm also presuming the woods free or next to nothing in cost, that being the case does it matter if it takes an extra ten minutes to warm the hot water up?...

nothing about these firefly thingy's..

Just about spending money on hybrids of anything, two systems to do what one will do fine...

Wind power, bio fuels, alternative energy all a waste of time..

Hybrid cars are the same, two systems when one would do fine..

The very definition of Hybrid says inefficient..

to be honest, I think all these hybrids are a con, they seem to have a green appeal and that seems to be their selling point..

Really shows how little you understand about power generation peaks and troughs. As a simple example if you have a normal power demand of 100kw but a peak power demand of 200kw then conventionally you would need a 200kw generator however with a hybrid system you could get away with using a 125kw generator.

Yea, well your right about that, I don't know anything about having a 125Kw hybrid generator instead of a 200Kw generator...

How much does a 200Kw generator cost as opposed to a 125 hybrid?...

whats the life cycle of those batteries?... replacement costs?..

err, be interesting to find out..

I paid for the solar panels thermal not PV remember so nowt added to your leccy bill to subsidise them, as I said i got them 8 years ago before the whole solar PV and RHI took off.

Yes wood is mostly free (chainsaw fuel) money wise, but it still costs me in time and labour in cutting, moving, splitting and stacking so the panels save me burning a load of wood. Also remember when it comes to efficiency if my memory serves me correctly the solar thermal panels are 85% efficient, much better than power stations at 30% efficiency or many other types of power than we use in our every day lives.

Back to the original post about the hybrid genny I have no idea how good or bad the idea/ product is as this is the first I have heard of it.

Seein as the cost of those panels hasn't been subsidized by anyone I have no complaint about their use..

But thinking about subsidies, it got me to wondering if those hybrid generators haven't been subsidized by some government grant green initiative or some other back door costs to promote their products..

I had some bozo phone me up tryin to get me to buy some woodchip boiler a while back, said it would pay for itself..

How much is the chip I said, about two fifty a ton or some such ridiculous figure..

NO thanks I said, I chop my own for nowt...

Not bothered I know the technology works and can save a fortune in fuel costs. If your that concerned get a quote from JCB. As for batteries there not new technology the batteries are 2v similar to whats been used in telephone exchanges for decades. They normally have a lifespan of 15 years and 15000 cycles by which time the generator would probably be scrapped anyway.

It's basically just a ups. These can be picked up for peanuts second hand as after 3 years they have very little value. I have a two year old 25 kva single phase in stock for £1500. A 40 kva 3 phase 2 years old £2500 no batteries but you don't want second hand batteries any way. Have large battery cabinets if needed.
