You could get a chainsaw mill as well. Then you could quarter large logs with the chainsaw before breaking them down further with the ripsaw.

i do that already with my 20" rip saw but was looking to cut logs through and through to get waney edged boards and get the maximum yield possible from each log. i've species like damson, lawsons, yew, catalpa, cherry and laburnum that i would like full width boards if possible. cutting like this gives me more opportunity to do a greater range of things once dry.

Surely its a case of thinking aboult how to hold the log to stop it moving if you want to cut a log that small on a horizontal bandsaw. Some of the beefier vertical bandsaws would allow you to plank logs of that size. Logging bandsaws spec sheet - Spectrum Plant

Also Atika make a couple of big site saws that could be used for ripping. Belle ATIKA BTH 400 450mm Contsruction Grade Wood Circular Saw Bench 230v | eBay

I think the logs you want to mill would be doable with the Turbosawmill

And I've just found this mill which I hadn't seen before whilst looking for the Turbosawmill link,

Perhaps a bit more than you need.

I agree with you that there is a need for being able to use good quality but either small volume or small size timber. There is certainly growing consumer interest in things that are sourced locally. The farming sector is doing a really good job about convincing the public to buy local. Why is the forestry sector not doing the same, the door has already been opened.....

On my fourth favourite soapbox subject....

if i had the dosh then i would be going for one of those.

Steve, it is a bit of a mission, but if it is only for the occasional log and finances are tight then why not consider making one? Most of the stuff can be found at any decent scrappy for a few quid and then either weld it up or get a mate with a welder to help. There is a bloke on youtube who even made a passable bandsaw from WOOD! Have a look.
