I'm afraid theres no room for guestimates with the weights and measures act. You will never be able to guarantee that minimum weight unless you use a bag full of balsa wood as your base measurement.

I know there is no room for guesstimates with weights and measures. However all the log sellers have been doing something for a long time.

Maybe a crate could be made up in various sizes and bags filled inside this.

Weights and measures won't care if you give too much away! They want to know you are not giving too little unless it's a controlled substance like alcohol etc.

You could sell it as minimum 50kg (not enough I know )as long as people know what they are getting that would not matter. Unless you are willing to try and go down the calorific value route.

The Trading Standards letter refers to a recognised measuring device? A ruler or tape measure? Why can't you therefore just measure your dumpy bag when it's full, do the sums w x h x l and call it x cu metres of loose logs? If they're stacked in crates I simply give the dimensions of the crates and point out they are not loose logs, but packed tightly.

easiest answer is just give the dimension of the bag which is what we already do in most cases.

NOT BEFORE TIME,,,,,,,,,,

TACHOGRAPHS AND TRAILERS..??

Very few log sellers will need a tacho. You would need to either be carrying them for another seller so you are just doing haulage or be delivering outside of a 100km radius of your base.

Carrying your own product or product you have sold inc delivery is not hire & reward.

I used to count the logs I put in, whether it was a net bag, wheely bin, large vented bag or lorry load.

They were all and loaded for quality control and it's not hard to count.

I would describe the log size to the customer and offer a replacement log if any were not as described .

Never had any problems.

There is also no reason you couldn't sell be weight, know your moisture content, set a price and weigh them, simples.

If either of those things are wrong then the customer deserves the right to a refund or exchange, the exact same way any retail business works .

Rather than go in the huff or have a hissy when there is a customer concern or complaint, be professional.

It also protects the business from fake complaints or chancers.

some common ground maybe but if your not allowed to talk volume or weight what solution do you have to market bags,

We stock 0.25, 0.73, 1.0 & 2.0 bulk bags and what they are saying is we will have to refer to them all as just a bulk bag and your not allowed to say what it's capacity is or what it might weigh who will buy like that I certainly wouldn't can just see the conversation on the phone.

How much is in a bag? "not allowed to tell you"

Well what does it weigh? " not allowed to tell you that either"

I have emailed them back asking for clarification on what exactly a load is, will wait and see if I get a reply.

I think you've summed up the issue pretty well.

If people cannot understand what a cubic meter bag is they shouldn't be trusted to burn logs in the first place.

It would be good to hear what the response is
