Weight kg per M-cube of solid wood?

Anyone have any ideas?

 

I've calculated the volumes of a load of sticks and was wondering how I could estimate their weight.

per stick or as a load.

I've found a site that says Ash goes 650kgs per metre cube (seasoned)

I was looking at a load of semi-seasoned sweet chestnut.

Seasoned ash is more like 400/450 kg per cube of sub20%

 

Seasoned sweet chestnut would be quite high I would say around 650/700 kg per cube of sub 20%

I had made a few calculations based on 650kg.

I just don't want to under do it too much or I'll not be able to handle it.

could you not use their weight given by kiln dried timber charts?

 

for instance, european ash is about 680kg for 1 cubic meter at 12%. if you are working in feet then it's 35.31ft3.

 

 

wet wood is going to be about 25-30% more in weight.

Just test a sample.

 

Cut a piece say 10cmx10cmx10cm. Weigh it then multiply by 1000

 

When you semi seasoned sweet chestnut how long has it been down? Our experience is it's implausibly slow drying in the round. I have some 3+ years old stuff here so may test some out of interest.

when kiln dried to the same mc, yes...

 

ash is about 44lbs ft3 and sweet chestnut is about 37lbs ft3.

Ash is one of the heaviest timbers once kiln dried to 8%. Up there with oak and yew.

 

For roundwood, I work on the basis of 700-900kg per cubic metre, depending on species.

Surprised it's that high on average Steve. Just grabbed a sample of Ash and S chestnut. Workings are on the wood
