just flicked through my book (the complete guide to trees, mitchel and more) and can see the one labeled patagonian cypress is a dead ringer...

 

 

i'd be interested in a sample of the timber if it turns out to be that species.

Looks like Hinoki Cypress to me (Chamacyparis obtusa).

Think after the help from here it looks like sawara cypress as the bark was stringy
