If open source does become the future, I just hope it's proper grass roots stuff and not the result of some sort of astroturfing.

I don't know about the future and I wouldn't claim linux is as polished as apple or windows but there is plenty of support, many slugs where one can go and ask a few questions.

In fact nowadays I find it just works out of the box, I use mint 17, and the issue with formats seems only to occur when you open certain documents created in windows, there is no problem when creating and printing from open office or libre.

There can be some problems with the more esoteric functions in excel as calc doesn't recognise VBA.

Hi

I think your comment was valid when I first got interested in Linux as an alternative some 20 years ago, but things have moved on a great deal and the online support commnities are very extensive. I also found the command line extremely powerful & some of it very similar to Ms Dos

Always worth a go if you have a spare box to run it on & dosnt break the bank, so its good to see a few forum users here trying it to - so well done to Openspaceman et all.

I have never forked out for office software, Ive had openoffice and now on libreoffice on an older mac, it does what I need, it opens microsoft office made stuff I get off the web or emailed.

Though free it relies on user donations to fund it. You will not be able to upgrade without contributing. But I still run an old version fine without the updates.

best thing i done with a computer was when it became frustratingly slow, i converted to ubuntu, now it boots quicker than any laptop i had, and when you need a program you just select it and it downloads for free and installs itself.

costs nothing and worth a punt before you next upgrade a computer

+ 1 from me,

Dunno why more people dont give it a go, must be plenty of 'old' PCs that can't run the latest Winodws which would happly run Ubuntu.

My fav is Backtrak Linux because it has no install - just boot from the disc, along with host of network & analytical tools :D

i have downloaded libre with no problems. Have had a quick scan through it, and it seems very simple to use. Time will tell, but pleased with what i have seen so far.

Excellent, Im sure there are a few differences but I hope you find it a good alternative.
