What are you burning in it ?, sounds like an over fireing issue., ,you do say you are working it very hard. Just because a brick is cracked does not mean it wants replacing, they work fine with a few cracks but once the brick breaks into 4 or more pieces or the brick starts to crumble then replace. On my own Morso its about every 2 or 3 years.

 

The baffle plates will not bend unless subjected to very high temperatures. Burning petrolium based cokes will kill any stove in short time, your handbook says avoid these fuels. Burning softwood with the air supplys both fully open will also cause an overfiring issue. Close the air supply in the lower part of the door once the fire is established of burning logs.

Sorry, yes it is open planned.

It's to be used as a general DIY workshop and for flower processing/ floristry.... just looking to get it to a nice working temperature.

 

There is a mezzanine floor over half of the footprint (6m x 5m) so I'm guessing it might be best to put a woodburner in that section rather than the other side of the barn which is full height.

 

I've put 50mm of insulation in the roof and also with a vapour control layer in the roof.

The walls will have 100mm insulation and the floor will have 65mm.

 

Basically, ithe barn is designed to be used as a comfortable work area.

Hot air rises, dont put the stove on the upper level but by all means put it under the mezzanine. Just think how you are going to flue it, off teh top, through the wall at 45 degrees then up the outside would be best. Needs to be twin wall fully insulated flue parts except if you wish a short run off the stove.

I only burn seasoned wood in it, the local stove shop said could be a build up of ash on top retaining excessive heat, the bricks were crumbling away when replacing the plate the ones in it just now are cracked in about 8 pieces but haven't fallen out yet. was thinking to replace it with something around 8kw and can take 14 15" log

Hi Steve I no someone with room of that size similar to what you have there they had a 10 kW stove in their hardly took the chill off the room just waste of money thanks Jon

 

 

I bet if you got under the roof you would have been amazed how hot it was, hence my comments about Ecofan. Having said that 10kw is nowhere near good enough. Most good brands rate their outputs conservatively, 4kw stoves that will give 6kw if asked, this is mainly due to thicker metal used in construction and better ways of air supply. The cheaper brands tend to mark it as it is, so a 10kw chinese build is pretty well 10kw max. I am aware of one Morso model that is now rated at 9.5kw, a few years ago it was rated at 14kw which is its true output if pushed, its a huge stove.

 

This sort of thing is why anyone should buy a stove from a specialist who knows his products inside out rather than just a box mover.

Hi Geoff this was very old place he need 30)40 then I'm thinking will be enough power this room we were in about 5 years ago was very large and high ceilings and very old place not good insolated thanks Jon

To what degree is the space insulated? If it's nowt or thereabouts, then the bigger the better. But having such a high ceiling, is always going to mean, that most of the heat will be where people are not. Any chance of fitting two stoves, (one at either end)?

We loved the squirrel in our old house have another morso now an insert one also very good.

 

I need a very small stove for a 4.3x3.8 x2.2m well insulated room any recommendations. I rekon 4kw would be to hot even with the door open..

Thanks for the input, I also heard from someone who has two Squirrels each only a year or so old, so I guess my concerns about current quality have been answered.

 

I'll look at the other models you mention, thanks, although we prefer a traditional rather than futuristic look.
