i went to work in the woods when i was 20, i was super fit as i used to train all the time, was used to grafting all my life with my dad and i had even completed the marines 5 day trial at lympstone. but i have never been so knackered climbing over brash in huge chainsaw wellies trying to carry a saw, wedges, hammer, lever and lunch box. it was a nightmare. it didnt help that i had just passed my tickets and thought 'i am going to be a lumberjack' i used to spend all my time running up and down mountain sides going for another saw to cut me out, they thought i was like a mountain goat. i lasted 5 weeks, what an experience though. thats why i became a climber, but i learnt so much in that time although i didnt realise it at the time

i reckon it should be part of college's courses to make you do time in the woods, a good 3months maybe?

i started as a climber and do all the felling on my jobs,

i bort an acre of woodland to keep my log pile replenished and found that, out in the wood you can practise some really good felling techniques and lots of issues with leaning trees, when ya in a customers garden you cant make mistakes, that last cut as ya felling has to be perfect

a woodmans job is back breaking, i know ive tried it, but i did enjoy being out on my own in the wood and cooked a few sassages on the fire yum yum

I have to say, I have always done forestry and just moved into tree surgery. Forestry is definatly harder work physicly but tree surgery is alot harder on H&S and paper work, working with the public, is it ever worth the hassel?
