ArborCareEffect I'm sure you're thinking as others before you; the Stein trolley is a lot of money for what it is.

But it isn't. Development and marketing costs account for some of the retail price but it's still fantastic value. It will last you for years.

For argument's sake let's say you somehow manage to make it unusable after 5 years.

The cost then will be ~£80p.a. for hours of time saved, backs not as ruined, flower beds not trashed by 9' wide armfuls of brash and bigger logs moved (= less ringing up).

 

Buy one. The maths of making one just don't add up in the long run.

Buy 1 u tight git. I looked into making one. By the time you sorted materials out, construction time and everything else its easier and cheaper to buy one. Plus you don't have to stop work to build it. (my kids did it)

I made one and it's way better than the stein one. Much better balanced. I also sourced much better wheels that don't puncture. The only fault is the axle is slightly bent from overloading! Took about a day to make and cost me £40, most of which was the wheels. another would take half that time.

I think if you add up the cost of materials ( the wheels aint cheap), paint etc. Plus time to plan, cut and weld it all you wont be far off buying one.

 

Depends how you value your time, a day out with the kids or a day in the shed making a fancy wheelbarrow...

 

Mine paid for itself on its firsts days use.

Can you give a breakdown of material costs?

 

I'm struggling to get to £40 on a rough estimate.

i dont think its about the maths its about whether your the sort of person who can and enjoys this sort of project, if so then your gonna have stuff around to make it out of, plus the satisfaction of making it.

Oh don't get me wrong I like to make something rather than buy it as much as the next guy. I just can't get to £40 including the steel, cutting disks, weldong rods or MIG wire and gas, if the bulk of that is the wheels?

 

Economics of scale often make 'build me self me own ' to be a futile excercise. Sad but true.

fair enough £40 does sound a bit optimistic, a friend built one out of an old trampoline frame and he said that all the bits n bobs for it did mount up ( not near the retail of a stien mind), a handy yoke though.
