Evening all

I'm looking at getting into climbing for fun to start then do my relevant tickets. I know a few folks that can show me the ropes 😜 and also I rock climb so have a knowledge of rope work. Interested in srt mainly

I'm trying to out together a kit list to get me started and I'd love some ideas and tips

Harness - petzl as my rock harnesses are petzl and the fits good

Rope - some say marlow but lots of choice, also what lentgh is best?

Ascenders - hand and foot

Mechanic prussik - zigzag?

Lanyard and flipline - make one from rope and a grab or buy one?

Throw line - line choices and bag choices?

That's as far as I have, I'm on a budget of around £700-800 for this stuff but if I can save some money I'd like to as it's taken a while to get this money together.

Thanks folks.

If you are wanting to use a saw in a tree eventually, forget climbing, you can already do that.

Learn how to use a saw first.

If it's just to play in the trees, you don't need tickets.

Kids have been doing it for centuries :)

I already cut forestry and help out some arb guys, but want to start climbing more for fun right now.

This is my regular setup that I used that Saturday when you worked with me...

Harness - petzl sequoia

Rope - yale hedera

Friction device - zigzag

Lanyard - home made- Marlow 5 metre rope, rock exotica rope grab, stein 3 way snap and a rock exotica d karabiner

Start with a simple Prussik before buying a zigzag.

I just use a foot ascender - petzl pantin - for any long ascents...

But for SRT it's all different.. You need things like base anchors, rope wrench, bulldog bones etc.. I don't know much about SRT but I'm not sure if it's a good starting point. Could be wrong though.

Anyway, get a harness and we'll go for a climb. I've got loads of spares you can use and try different things
