I thought that as well, I think that has to be the most requested id on here, seems to catch a lot of people out. Me as well first time I came across it.

When I started learning the basic tree id's I always thought it was ash

Hard to tell from photos but I have seen people go straight for Alianthus when it has in fact been Pterocarya fraxinafolia. Flowers make it obvious though if available.

I find it's the bark of the ailanthus is the id feature for me.

Yes the leaves are similar tho.

I saw one out on survey today. The leaflets have a notch near the base, and it's pretty much the standard check I do to eliminate all other possibilites.

The alternative is to climb it and fall to the deck as a sound-looking branch gives way beneath you.

Fair play to you guys, you really know your stuff, great knowledge. We went to

Trebah gardens today ( they have 9 Champion trees by the way, largest girth or tallest in the UK, really cool place) and the Pterocarya is in flower so the tree in Hepworths place is Ailanthus. Thanks.
