Plotting trees on a map

You have a very complex structure there. There are several tonal and textural differences, so I could pick out perhaps 6/7 different classifications (not sure of species from this image, just 6/7 types that look different from one another).

 

So, this is where the ground truthing that I advised comes in to play. You need to go to the woodland, perhaps just the woodland edge in 2 or 3 different locations, and mark down on a copy of this image which are Oaks.

 

Then with a bit of time, and using your ground truthed Oaks to refer back to, you can go through the image trying to identify which canopies have a similarity - thus identifying your Oaks from the image.

 

There may be a programmatic way to achieve this, involving some high end software. Let me first find out if this is possible before I can say anymore.

 

In the meantime, I feel a trip to the woods is on your cards...

Is all of the woodland yours? If so there looks to be more than 50 Oak trees. In most cases woodlands would not locate individual trees due to the problems mentioned in pervious threads. It maybe that you find the most important trees to you and locate them. Otherwise it maybe good to tag each tree and then make notes about them. That was you can still spot each tree and record the data, and it will cut down on mapping of each tree and getting confused where you are.

Just for my own interest and the fact that I like to have a crack at things like this, I believe that there may be a way to ID the locations of the Oak trees purely from the image, using a code I have written.

 

It works in a trial, just with some random blob colours, but Id like to have a go at using this on your woodland image.

 

The thing is - I need to know exactly where there are confirmed Oaks in the image, so these can be used as training data for the 'search' for other Oaks.

 

So - did you get out to your woodland and confirm their locations or not? If you did, could you please circle on a copy of the screen dump some of the tree canopies that are definitely Oaks, then I will take it from there...

Providing you have a good phone signal could you not just download a GPS logger. Stand next to the oak tree and set the point, give it a name like oak 1.

 

A little different I know but I use GPS Essentials to log areas of river I fish. I can plot captures, under water snags and any other info. It can be viewed on a computer once home too and the waypoints can be fine tuned if needed.

My trimble GPS with a duel band antenna couldn't get a signal under a canopy like that.

I'm currently at uni studying towards a BSc in arb and wouldn't mind giving up a weekend if you're close to help plot these for you as I would be learning something out of it as well.
