whilst changing a battery lead on the mog the other day the cap on the starter solenoid split in 2 around the terminal pole. i replaced it with another solenoid exactly the same dimensions, voltage etc but with a different part number but told was a compatible part.

now when i connect the battery terminal the starter engages on its own?? :cursing: i tried it with ignition wire disconnected and it still does it???? any ideas?

its 2 main poles. 1st is the motor supply and the 2nd is the battery positive lead which also has the alternator output wire on and finally it has a small screw terminal at the side which the ignition wire connects to.

been checking through wiring diagrams and all i have done is correct, starting was never an issue with old solenoid but this has me baffled, i thought perhaps the contacts could be stuck inside the solenoid but if the ignition wire is disconnected then surely it wouldnt engage

the terminals have different sized poles so will only fit the leads and wiring one way unless you took a drill to them and reamed the ring connectors out, i dont remember doing this so i decided to pull the guts out the new solenoid tonight and found the so called "new" solenoid was rusty inside and the terminals had stuck in the engaged position.
