[Lost in the Wilderness]

I'm looking for expertise/solution to a problem. I want to improve the ground clearance on a TT85 trailer, by fitting 16" wheels to take Land Rover tyres. The options look like new axles, new brake drums, or hopefully easiest, new 4 stud 16" wheels. What do you think?

The bigger wheels will foul the bottom of the trailer so you will need to put a spacer between the spring hangers and the chassis. Hardly sounds worth the bother to be honest. what are you pulling it with because most 4x4's are crap off road once you put a heavy trailer behind them, whatever tyres they have on....

Thanks for the response. The idea is to use the tractor in the wood, and Land Rover on the road. I tried a wheel against the trailer and there looks to be clearance? Spacers wouldn't be to much hassle, I was hoping some one out there would know of a 4 stud wheel which would fit onto the existing hubs.

Give Trailparts a call, 01923 253366. Explain what you want, and they should be able to source 16" rims with the Ifor stud pattern. There is a fair bit of clearance above the wheels on a flatbed, so you may get away with not modifying the suspension. Try to change as little as possible, as the running gear on Ifors is well designed and bomb proof. Good luck, and please post some pics if you are successful :-)

No jokes know, but by putting 16'' wheels on you are only going to get a extra inch and a half more clearance is it worth the hassle.

You'll get more than that as the tyres have a much deeper sidewall. I'd be careful dragging a road going trailer off road behind a tractor - the Ifors are pretty strong but a tractor/stump/rut/Rock combo will quickly rip off brake cables and bend those skinny little axles without you even noticing...

I'll try Trailer Parts, thanks for the contact. The rock/ruts/stumps is exactly why I would like to try raising the ride height. The trailer hitch for the tractor is on the 3point linkage, so it does allow you to "walk" the trailer to a certain extent, over obstacles you can't avoid.

If you do manage to get a bit more height watch the c of g especially if you use mesh sides the tt85 as it is sits high. I have a tt105 and that almost hugs the ground in comparison.

Thanks Maxwellarb, Trailer parts were very helpful. Replacement 5 stud hubs to fit the existing axles are available, at a price! £113 +vat each. I'll have to seriously think if I can justify the cost.
