Iv do some every year with Rytec flail collector and it does a superb job, never blocked. It's far from a fSt job though. On the other hand I used to forage bracken of the heathland in the new forest and rushes on the marsh with a Kidd double chop and 6 ton trailer in tow, was very durable but not quick due to size of the Kidd forager.

I've a few years (and some) of experience of cutting and exporting on sensitive sites. The "crop" ranging from 6ft high grass to just old heather to rushes and birch regen.

We used a drum mower+silage wagon

A butterfly mower+ silage wagon

A flail with blower towing high-sided chain-ejector trailer (favourite for a few years as eats everything and the "produce" composts quickly due to chop lenght etc)

The current set-up is a 7m wide mower (one on the front, two on the back) followed by a 14m double acrobat type rower-upper followed either by the silage wagon or a round baler.

For anything that needs moving more than 2 miles or so we make round bales. They all go to an AD plant. Its by far the cheapest and easiest way. Anything roadside we just bale and leave in wee piles, to be collected with a grab lorry.

If I have not managed to make hay before September then its out with the old Robinson flail and chopped straight into the trailer towed behind the flail or if the grounds to wet for the trailer then straight into IBC's on the back of the flail.

Interesting, this is what I would have thought best but surely by September there’s precious little volatile solids left for it to produce much gas?

I got our local contractor on the phone today.

Voila!

They run a Wiedenmann Super 500, apparently very pleased with its performance, and would be keen to take on our work.

About £20,000.00 (less reasonable LA discount), to purchase, so workable either way!
