Lathe chisels are sharpened on a bench grinder with a white wheel, can be done with jigs but once you get used to doing it freehand sharpening is the way to go, takes seconds to sharpen a gouge and you may sharpen 3/4 times on a bowl

Going off the original topic a bit but if a decent quality whetstone suitable for sharpening the gouge shaped chisels. That seems like it's go. A be a skill in itself to master

NO! you will be there for hours and hours a simple slow speed grinder with a sharpening jig of some description, I use a robert sorby jig or there is the wolverine type, allows quick easy repeatable grinds in a few seconds and you will need to sharpen often to keep tools sharp to make the turning enjoyable, dull tools is a problem as are multiple bevels.... sounds complicated but easy to achieve.

Ok. What about this. It's cheap but I expect it will only get occasional use

Thanks for all the help, Mick

it'll do the job but make sure you don't burn the metal on older tools.

modern HSS are ok but you need a slow grinder really.

i could do with clearing out my tool rack if you want some freebies.

no bowl gouges but you can have some scrapers, spindle gouges and a skew.

That is a great offer thanks very much Steve. I was still hoping to be able to take you up on the offer of a crash course as well if possible.

I'll have a look at the Axminster grinder now
