ive allways been led to believe its nothing more than curtousy and nothing legal. technically you are responsible for the maintanance of the rails on your fence so it makes sense that on fences with rails (such as closedboard for example) you keep the rails on the inside. obviously you are responsible for all parts of your fence but i think the reason for it being specific to rails is that they form part of the main structure of the fence. hope this helps.

every time we do fencing we always put the feather edge boards or what ever fence it is on the paying customers side, as said previously everything can be done from the customers gardenand why should the customer see the bad side.

My landscape team finished a job today that seamed to go on, and on, and on, and on..........It all went really well, we installed the posts and edgings than the tarmacers came in to do the path and now we have returned to rail it up. An unusual specifiaction, its supposed to look rustic!

Nice work mate, its good to see a good job. i do quite a bit of fencing, its great to be able to offer the whole package, trees out, stumps out a:thumbup:nd then a nice fence. this hedge was hiding a horrid council steel and concrete fence, because of the drop into the garden.
