Milling crooked / bent timber

Hi,

 

Looking please, for advice on milling bent logs - to take out the bend

 

I.e best first cut? bend facing upwards or not... Second cut etc

 

Resulting in hopefully straight boards... !?

I start on the flattest part on top through and through cut then cut out the bend with the vertical mill.I'm chainsaw milling by the way.Seems to work but always happy to learn.

If you have a bent log and need straight boards, you are best to find a straight log. Even if you manage to get a few boards out of it, the wastage will be terrible and the boards will have tension in them due to the grain not being straight or following the cut.

 

Save the bent ones for the firewood pile or mill through and throught and sell the bend as a feature.

I got some similar but couldn't get all the way round the turn.

The boat builders would pay handsomely for bends like that kinderscout!!

as Big j said, you cant mill straight boards from curved logs.

I milled it a couple of months back and was told it is larch by the tree surgeon. It's milled at two inch thick and fourteen wide.milled with xp 3120 and 42 bar.

Kevin I milled it with saw on the out side of the tree with a 42 bar , milled up to the bend in the log and then pulled the tail end to the cut side then cut the bend.
