Burning slab wood

Agreed on all counts. Slab has now gone up a little in line with demand for chip feeding biomass boilers but nowhere near £30 delivered. I used to only burn slabwood but it was free. A lot more work than round wood though. Might be worth enquiring how much for a lorry load if you can store it.

At the scale you are working apart from the time to take the banding off is there any additional processing cost? Or do you trundle bits home on the red skateboad for domestic use :sneaky2:

Its a bit slower chipping as we need to avoid slivers so go for a smaller chip. Works out marginally cheaper as the slabwood is cheaper and drier to start with. We drop whole bundles in the chipper and leave the bands on. After we have chipped I normally tidy up after work, so that benefits both parties. Don't think I could carry enough on the skateboard to make it worthwhile though.

Looking for people's views on burning saw mill off cuts, saw mill is less than a mile from my house but the want £30 a ton

I know it burns quickly but is it worth it by the time I buy it and cut to "logs"

Cheers

It its hardwood then it will burn very well and generate a lot of heat, but it will burn fast. Small pieces allow for more turbulence within the fire thus promoting the fire.

For your own use then go for it, but if looking to cut and resell then the amount of work involved will not make it cost effective.
