I've just recently purchased a few ex hire stihl chainsaws from auction but as I've always owned an used husqvarna saws I don't know which stihl models are classed as pro saws and which are not, the saws I've just purchased are as follows 023, 211, 230, 240, 250 and a 361 I wreckon the 211 is a homeowner saw and the 361 a pro saw but it's the other 4 I can't tell much difference between ?

Can anyone enlighten me as to which is the best of that bunch as I want to keep a couple for backup saws.

The 240 and 361 are pro rest are domestic

& both well worth hanging on to, even if the 240 dosn't run, if it has compression then it's probably not beyond repair.

Used to be black back handle for home user, orange for farmer and white for 'pro'.

These days they seem to stick to it less rigidly.

The ms280 (home/farm) has a white handle for example.

They never really were able to stay 100% true to any such system, but it looks like they tried at times. There always were exceptions, and there always were some older models that didn't match the "system".

In reality, you need to know what model is what.

The ol' 045 went agaist both alledged systems, as it was a pro saw, with on odd model number, and a orange rear handle.

The pro saws have had white lower part/black top strip to the rear handle, since 80's. The 028/ms280 was exception as also had this handle style, was told by a dealer years back that 028 was a pro saw in quality, but listed in the farm range and with fixed flow oiler. Possibly 038 also, discontinued here but 381 is a forestry saw (handle is white with black top) in other parts of world still.

I must get a life really.

The 028 and the MS280 were very different saws, so please don't write 028/MS280. It wasn't anywhere like other 0xx/MSxx0 transisions. Also, there always were exceptions from the "rule" you described, the MS280 being one of them when it came out, it wasn't a pro saw, despite the white/black rear handle. That happened long after the the 028 had been replaced by the 026, that had become the MS260 at that point.
